IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon Killed

IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon has died following a 15-car crash at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The crash happened on lap 11 of the 200-lap race to decide the series championship. Wheldon's car flew over another and caught part of the catch fence, leaving Townsend Bell's car upside down other cars piled up behind.

Also involved in the crash were cars driven by Will Power, Paul Tracy, Buddy Rice, Alex Lloyd, E.J. Viso, Charlie Kimball, Tomas Scheckter, Jay Howard, Townsend Bell, Wade Cunningham, Pippa Mann, JR Hildebrand, James Jakes and Vitor Meira. Power, Mann and Hildebrand were also taken to hospital.

Dan Wheldon posted 16 victories in 134 IZOD IndyCar Series races, after making his first start in September 2002 at Chicagoland Speedway.

He is survived by his wife, Susie, and two young sons.
