Report: Senate Health Care Plan to Cost $1.6 Trillion
2009-06-17 03:44am

The latest health care reform proposal in the U.S. Senate could cost as much as $1.6 trillion over the course of a decade, sources said Wednesday.

The Associated Press, quoting Democratic and Republican Senate staffers, said Congressional Budget Office estimates put the cost of the Finance Committee version of the bill at around $1.6 trillion.

An additional Democratic staffer said the committee was working to lower the cost of the plan to less than $1 trillion over 10 years, an amount preferred by President Barack Obama.

Problems with paying for the legislation have held up its progress in recent days, the report said.
