Barr to Announce Libertarian White House Bid
2008-05-12 07:42am

Former U.S. congressman Bob Barr of Georgia is set to announce he will run for president on the Libertarian Party ticket.

Barr, a Republican while in Congress and a former U.S. prosecutor, has a news conference scheduled for Monday. Party officials consider him a front-runner because of his national profile developed while in Congress from 1995 to 2003.

Barr, 59, helped lead Bill Clinton's impeachment. He quit the Republican Party two years ago, saying he had grown disillusioned with its founding principles of smaller, less intrusive government and what he said was the GOP's willingness to ditch civil liberties to fight terrorism.
