Former Dem Party Leader Backs Obama
2008-05-01 06:17am
A former leader of the Democrat Party under Bill Clinton has switched his allegiance to Sen. Barack Obama and has urged other members to "heal the rift in our party" and unite behind him.
Joe Andrew, head of the Democratic National Committee from 1999-2001, was planning to make a formal announcement in his hometown of Indianapolis. He has also written a letter explaining his decision to be delivered to other superdelegates.
"I am convinced that the primary process has devolved to the point that it's now bad for the Democratic Party," he said in an interview with The Associated Press.
Bill Clinton appointed Andrew chairman of the DNC near the end of his presidency. He endorsed Sen. Hillary Clinton on the day she declared her candidacy last year.
