Sep 21, 2017 20:52 - Unrest at Bogoslof volcano continues. Nothing noteworthy has been observed in mostly cloudy satellite images of Bogoslof Island over the past day. No significant activity was detected in seismic or infrasound data from neighboring islands. Bogoslof volcano remains at a heightened state of unrest and in an unpredictable condition. Activity can escalate quickly with explosions producing high-altitude (>15,000 ft) volcanic clouds with little to no detectable precursory activity. Some previous explosions have been preceded by an increase in earthquake activity that ...read more »

AVO Cleveland ORANGE/WATCH - No activity in satellite, seismic or infrasound data.

Sep 21, 2017 20:52 - Low-level unrest continues at Cleveland Volcano. Nothing of any volcanological significance was observed in satellite data over the past day. Web camera views of the summit obscured by clouds over the past day. No significant activity has been detected in seismic or infrasound data. Cleveland volcano is monitored with a limited real-time seismic network, which inhibits AVO's ability to detect precursory unrest that may lead to an explosive eruption. Rapid detection of an ash-producing eruption may be possible using a combination of seismic, infrasound, lightning, and ...read more »

Arecibo Status

21 Sep 13:11 | SciTech

I've been asked by several people to post a status update on the situation at Arecibo following hurricane Maria's passage. Unfortunately, at this point we haven't gotten any news. The last information we have is from a couple hours prior to when the eye passed Arecibo. That report said all the employees were accounted for and in sheltered buildings. Since then we've had no news. That's understandable. With power out on the whole island, electronics communications aren't going to be possible for some time. Heavy rains are still expected today, so I'm sure that the primary concern is still keeping everyone safe. Assessment of any damage will take time. Let's hope that everyone is safe, that their homes are intact, and that any damage can be repaired quickly. read more »

Transforming Chile’s health sector with connectivity

21 Sep 12:00 | Media

Editor’s note: From instant access to medical records, to telemedicine in rural areas, connectivity in the health sector has the power to improve lives. In this guest post, Soledad Munoz Lopez, CIO of the Chilean Ministry of Health, shares with us how Chile implemented a national API-based architecture to help bring better health to millions. Not long ago, Chile’s Ministry of Health (MINSAL) faced an enormous challenge. Chile’s 1,400 connected health facilities and 1,000 remote medical facilities lacked connectivity, and many of its healthcare systems could not easily interoperate. This meant healthcare providers couldn’t always expect to have fast and easy access to medical records.Earlier efforts to centralize and manage medical records across facilities fell apart because they were costly and far too laborious. And as a result, we missed out on a lot of opportunities. We came to realize that we needed read more »

Something’s coming … “West Side Story” on Google Arts & Culture
