AVO Bogoslof RED/WARNING - Significant explosive eruption and increase to Aviation Color Code and Alert Level.

9:36 am Eastern | SciTech

Jun 27, 2017 11:52 - A significant explosive eruption began at Bogoslof volcano at 11:17 UTC on June 27 (03:17 AKDT) as indicated in seismic and lighting data and is continuing. Although at this time there have been no satellite images or pilot reports received confirming eruptive activity, these monitoring data strongly suggest that significant ash emissions have occurred. Thus, AVO is raising the Aviation Color Code to RED and Alert level to WARNING. AVO is evaluating all data sources and will update this report as more information becomes available. read more »

The European Commission decision on online shopping: the other side of the story

6:15 am Eastern | Media

When you shop online, you want to find the products you’re looking for quickly and easily. And advertisers want to promote those same products. That's why Google shows shopping ads, connecting our users with thousands of advertisers, large and small, in ways that are useful for both.We believe the European Commission’s online shopping decision underestimates the value of those kinds of fast and easy connections. While some comparison shopping sites naturally want Google to show them more prominently, our data show that people usually prefer links that take them directly to the products they want, not to websites where they have to repeat their searches. We think our current shopping results are useful and are a much-improved version of the text-only ads we showed a decade ago. Showing ads that include pictures, ratings, and prices benefits us, our advertisers, and most of all, our users. And we show them only whenread more »

AVO Bogoslof ORANGE/WATCH - Seismicity has declined. Ash emissions decreased below detection limit or ended.

11:09 pm Eastern | U.S. News

Jun 27, 2017 02:48 - Seismicity for the eruption at Bogoslof volcano at 00:45 UTC on June 27 (16:45 AKDT on June 26) remained elevated until 00:59 UTC (16:59 AKDT) and has since declined to background levels. The eruption produced a volcanic cloud moving northeast with an estimated altitude of 25,000 ft asl by satellite data, and a pilot reported a visible cloud at 22,000 ft asl. Given the lower altitude of the volcanic cloud and short duration of the explosion, the Aviation Color Code remains ORANGE and Volcano Alert Level WATCH. Recent eruptive episodes have produced multiple ...read more »

AVO Bogoslof ORANGE/WATCH - No activity observed in seismic, infrasound or cloudy satellite data.

26 Jun 17:06 | U.S. News

Jun 26, 2017 20:43 - No signs of volcanic unrest associated with Bogoslof have been detected in seismic, infrasound or cloudy satellite data over the past 24 hours. Bogoslof volcano remains at a heightened state of unrest and in an unpredictable condition. Activity can escalate quickly with additional explosions producing high-altitude (>15,000 ft) volcanic clouds with little to no detectable precursory activity. Some previous explosions have been preceded by an increase in earthquake activity that allowed for short-term forecasts of imminent significant explosive activity. Although we ...read more »

AVO Cleveland YELLOW/ADVISORY - Nothing observed in satellite data. Nothing detected in seismic/infrasound data.

26 Jun 17:06 | SciTech

Jun 26, 2017 20:43 - Recent observations of Cleveland Volcano suggest that unrest has declined and it is unlikely that eruptive activity is continuing, prompting AVO to lower the Aviation Color Code to YELLOW and the Volcano Alert Level to ADVISORY earlier today. Satellite observations have yielded no evidence for continuing lava effusion since June 7, and there have been no detections of anomalous seismicity or infrasound from the volcano since a brief explosion on Tuesday evening (May 16) at 19:17 AKDT (03:17 May 17 UTC). Cleveland volcano is monitored with a limited real-time seismic ...read more »

Satellite and web camera views of the volcano have been obscured by clouds and fog and no unusual activity was detected in seismic or infrasound data over the past day. Cleveland volcano is monitored with a limited real-time seismic network, which inhibits AVO's ability to detect precursory unrest that may lead to an explosive eruption.
