U.S. Military Finding More Iranian Arms in Iraq
2007-11-12 10:46am
The U.S. military says it is finding more arms in Iraq that have been made in, and supplied by, neighboring Iran.
The quantity of Iranian bomb-making components is rising, in fact, even as the level of attacks is falling in Iraq.
Major-General Rick Lynch, whose command extends from Baghdad's southern suburbs south through Sunni Arab insurgent strongholds to the major Shi'ite cities of Kerbala and Najaf, said Sunday 20 Iranian-trained agents are still operating south of Baghdad.
"Iranian influence is dominant at many levels," he said.
Gen. Lynch said his forces were currently in pursuit of 20 members of Iran's Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps's (IRGC) elite Qods Force, who are operating in his area.
The U.S. has accused Iran of arming and financing extremist elements and insurgents operating in Iraq.
